I imagine this is going to be a very boring presidential campaign. I mean boring in the sense that Connolly will almost certainly win it. Fine Gael will probably put forward a candidate shortly, whoever they put forward and Gavin will likely cannibalise each other’s first preference vote.
Connolly will be very transfer vote friendly and will hoover up votes from those who would never vote for any candidate endorsed by FF or FG. The only thing that could hamper her campaign would be if Sinn Fein were to put forward their own high-profile candidate. Since McDonald has ruled herself out the only candidate that could be popular enough would be Gerry Adams. But I don’t believe he has much interest. O’ Neill or Doherty wouldn’t have a hope and the party know that.
Being a Galway person I am not a fan of some of Connolly’s positions and talking points. Broadly speaking she would represent a continuation of Michael D’s talking points. Her position on the Galway city bypass and insistence on a tram system that would never work has killed any support I once had for her. Personally I would prefer that the Irish president be focused on what’s happening in Ireland and not nearly exclusively on events in the Middle East or Russia/Ukraine.
